Who was St. Francis of Assisi?
Francis was born around 1181 in Assisi, Italy, the son of a wealthy cloth merchant. As a young man he loved fine clothes, songs, and dreams of knighthood — until war, imprisonment, and illness broke his ambitions open. Praying before the crucifix in the ruined chapel of San Damiano, he heard Christ speak: "Francis, rebuild my church."
He took the call literally at first, repairing chapels stone by stone. Then he understood it fully: he renounced his inheritance — famously returning even the clothes off his back to his father — and embraced a life of radical poverty and joy. Others followed, and the Franciscan order was born.
Two moments define his last years. At Greccio in 1223, he staged the first live nativity scene, so ordinary people could see the humility of Bethlehem with their own eyes — every crèche at Christmas descends from that night. And in 1224, on Mount La Verna, he received the stigmata, the wounds of Christ, which he carried until his death in 1226.
Patron of animals, ecology, and peace
Francis saw all creation as a family — "Brother Sun, Sister Moon" in his Canticle of the Creatures. He preached to birds, tamed the wolf of Gubbio in the old story, and treated the poor as Christ himself. The Church named him patron of animals and, in 1979, patron of ecology. His feast day is October 4, when parishes around the world hold the blessing of the animals.
